A protective agent watches over one party's interests when someone else has appointed the main port agent. V. Faytaren Shipping Agency acts as protective agent for ship owners and charterers at Batangas and other Philippine ports, giving you an independent set of eyes on the ground.
What our protective agent service covers
Under many charter parties the charterer nominates the port agent. That agent works for whoever appointed them, which is normal, but it leaves the owner without anyone local whose only job is to look after the owner's side. The same can happen the other way around. A protective agent, sometimes called a supervisory agent, fills that gap.
Our role is to watch, report and step in when needed. We keep track of the vessel's time in port, check that the statement of facts matches what actually happened, and flag anything that could turn into a claim later, from berthing delays to cargo disputes. We also support the master directly, since the master is often the person who feels the gap most.
Because we have been at the Port of Batangas since 1976 and work daily with the port authorities, terminals and pilots, we know how a normal port call should run. That makes it easier to spot when one is not running normally, and to explain why in a report you can use.
What we handle
- Independent monitoring of the vessel's port call
- Checking the statement of facts, time sheets and laytime events
- Daily or event-based reports to owners or charterers
- Support for the master with local authorities
- Early notice of delays, disputes or possible claims
- Review of the main agent's disbursement account
- Liaison with P&I correspondents and surveyors when needed
- Husbanding items for owner's account, kept separate from charterer's costs

Frequently asked questions
Why would an owner need a protective agent?
When the charterer appoints the port agent, the owner has nobody local working only for them. A protective agent reports on time, costs and events from the owner's side so problems can be raised while the ship is still in port.
Does a protective agent replace the main agent?
No. The main agent still handles clearances and the port call. We work alongside them and report to you, so the two roles do not overlap.
Can charterers appoint you as protective agent too?
Yes. Charterers sometimes want independent reporting when the owner has nominated the agent. We act for whichever party appoints us.
What do your reports include?
Arrival and berthing times, cargo progress, delays and their causes, and anything the master raises. We agree the format and timing with you before the vessel arrives.
